Tarantula fangs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a tarantula spiderling (family Theraphosidae) performing a forward strike. The spider's fangs (orange) can be seen at the end of the chelicerae (centre). To the side of the chelicerae are leg-like palps and beside them are the spider's legs. When tarantulas strike forward like this, they are attempting to sink their fangs into their prey (usually small birds or insects). Venom from the fangs will kill and digest the prey. The spider will then suck the prey juices into its mouth. Taratula spiderlings can take twelve years to reach adulthood. Magnification: x11 at 6x7cm size | |
