Golden orb spiders. View of male and female golden orb spiders (Nephila clavipes) resting on a web. The female is very much larger than the male, which is resting above her. Golden orb spiders are native to the moist and marshy forests of the south-eastern USA. The webs of these spiders are amongst the strongest webs known, and can span several feet. They are so strong they can even catch small birds which fly into them, and the strength of the silk is comparable to kevlar, the material from which bullet-proof vests are made. The female is very large, her body alone is around three centimetres in length. Photographed at La Selva Biological Station,Costa Rica | |
