Light micrograph of the venom fangs of an orb- weaving spider,Araneus diadematus. The fangs are borne at the tip of the chelicerae, the paired feeding appendages which lie in front of the mouth. Within the basal segment of each chelicera and occupying part of the head is a sac containing the poison. A duct leads from the sac to a small aperture at the tip of the fang, through which the poison is injected into the spider's prey. The venom not only paralyses the prey but also begins the process of digestion. The cheliceral teeth (bottom, centre) are used to grind up the paralysed victim. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size | |
