Dog flea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis). Adult dog fleas are 2-4mm long and have long combs, known as ctenidia,on both the thorax and the head,to help anchor them to a host's fur. They have 3 pairs of powerful legs adapted for jumping and have been known to jump up to 10,000 times in succession, whilst trying to leap onto a passing cat or dog. Once they have made a successful landing they begin to feed almost immediately using piercing mouthparts (lower centre) to penetrate the skin. Females will start to lay eggs within 48 hours of the first feed. Magnification: x33 when printed 10 centimetres wide | |
