Flea circus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a human flea (Pulex irritans) about to kick a football. The flea is a performer in Hans Mathes' Flea Circus, where trained fleas perform a range of tricks and stunts. This flea is a "footballer". A wire harness (blue) is secured over its head and behind its front legs. The flea clings to a styrofoam ball (green) which it shoots into a tiny goal (not seen) using the reflex kick of its powerful hind legs. The circus performs to audiences at the Munich Oktoberfest in Germany, for two weeks every year. Magnification unknown | |
