Bird fleas mating. Scanning electron micrograph of a pair of bird fleas mating. Fleas are small,blood-sucking,wingless insects. Most species visit the host only to feed, spending most of their lives in the host's nest. This pair was obtained from the nest of a blackbird. Note the helmet-shaped head (right) and laterally flattened bodies - adaptations that allow easy movement through the host's feathers. Some types of bird flea, such as the genus Ceratophyllus, feed readily on humans and domestic pets if an affected bird or nest is brought into the home. Magnification unknown | |
