Alder fly. Macrophotograph of a female alder fly (order Neuroptera) laying eggs on a plant stem. Around 200 eggs are laid, usually above water, into which the larvae fall on hatching. The larvae spend autumn in the water, feeding on smaller insects, before crawling into soil to overwinter as pupae. They emerge in late spring and early summer. Alder flies are carnivorous insects which prey mainly on smaller insects such as greenflies. They live and hunt amongst low plants in Britain and Europe. Their wings appear flimsy and their flight is weak. Magnification unknown | |
