Small tortoiseshell butterfly (Aglais urticae) on a flower. Small tortoiseshells are found in a range of habitats throughout Europe and temperate Asia. Small tortoiseshell caterpillars feed exclusively on stinging nettles and the butterfly is found wherever the plants grow, from urban areas to high mountainsides. When threatened, resting individuals rapidly open their wings, presenting a dramatic display of colours. This can frighten away young or inexperienced birds. Photographed in Kent,UK,in July | |
