Caterpillar head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a caterpillar. Caterpillars (order Lepidoptera) are the larval stage of the life cycle of a butterfly or moth. A caterpillar is an eruciform larva, one that has a well-developed head and mouth. Most caterpillars have six very simples eyes (pink) on each side of their head. These light sensitive stuctures are called ocelli or stemmata. It is thought they only sense light and dark, and cannot distinguish shapes or colour. Below the head are three pairs of true legs (not seen),behind which are pseudo- legs along the rest of the body, which provide a firm grip. Magnification: x15 when 10 cm wide | |
