Peacock butterfly (Inachis io) resting on a dandelion flower. This butterfly possesses large blue eyespots at the base of its wings, which are used to startle predators when the wings are flashed open. It is found in woodlands, fields and meadows, and gardens throughout Europe and Asia. The peacock butterfly has many different food sources, including flowers,over-ripe fruit and the sap from deciduous trees. The adult hibernates over the winter, emerging in late spring to reproduce. The underside of the wings is a dull brown colour, which camouflages the butterfly in the dark corners in which it hides during hibernation | |
