Red admiral butterfly. High-speed photograph of a red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) in flight above a flower. This butterfly has black wings broken up with orange bands and white spots. The underparts (not seen) are inconspicuous, with brown patterns that may camouflage the butterfly during hibernation. The adult inhabits woodland, the female laying her eggs on plants in the nettle family (Urticaceae). The red admiral is a migrant, coming to Britain and northern Europe in summer every year from areas further south. However,it can overwinter in warmer regions. It is found in Europe,North America,North Africa and Asia | |
