Moth camouflage. An unidentified species of "prominent" moth (family: Notodontidae) resting on the bark of a broken branch. This insect mimics bark or brown leaves,in its body markings and brown body colouration. Markings on its wings break up the moth's body outline, while also resembling cracks in the bark or the veins of a dead leaf. The behaviour of this moth is to remain quite still. By blending in with its environment, this moth gains protection against predators. "Prominent" moths are so-called because of the highly coloured caterpillars they produce. Photographed in France | |
