Moth camouflage. Two colour varieties of peppered moth Biston betularia on the bark of a tree. These two colour forms, light (above) and dark (beneath),are a famous example of evolution. In nature the light colour of this moth is most common. A light colour camouflages the moth on lichen-covered bark of trees, protecting the moth from bird predators. In 1840s England, industrial pollution turned trees a sooty black. The darker moth (occurring as a genetic mutation) was better camouflaged on sooty trees, and within 50 years became the commonest form. The light moth was seen and preyed upon by birds,an example of natural selection | |
