Eyespot on the hindwing of the butterfly Eriphanis polyxena (Brassolidae). When disturbed, this butterfly will suddenly flash eyespots on its wings in an intimidation display. These eyespots mimic the eyes of an owl and serve to frighten away predators. As here they are usually found on the hindwings, and are tucked away from view until needed. This Eriphanis butterfly was photographed at Los Cedros,Ecuador | |
