Polyrhachis laboriosa ants attacking an intruder. The intruder here is a driver ant (Dorylus nigricans),which the ants have attacked by spraying it with a jet of formic acid from their abdomens. The intruder's leg at lower centre has been dissolved by the acid. Polyrhachis laboriosa is endemic to Cameroon,Africa, and lives in trees at the edges of tropical forests. It feeds on honeydew produced by aphids, flower nectar, and sugary exudes from young leaves. Photographed in the Biosphere Reserve of Dja,Cameroon | |
