Bee head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified bee (superfamily Apoidea). A compound eye (red) is at centre. The antennae (pale brown, upper right) are sense organs. A long proboscis emerges from the mouth (lower left of eye) when the bee feeds on the nectar of flowering plants. On top of the head, just behind the antennae, are the ocelli. These three bumps form a triangle. They make up another visual sensory system, one that cannot focus but is very sensitive to variations in light intensity. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size | |
