Bee head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified bee (superfamily Apoidea). Compound eyes (red) are on either side of the head. The antennae (branching off the top of the head) are sense organs. A long proboscis emerges from the mouth (lower centre) when the bee feeds on the nectar of flowering plants. The hair on the bee's head and body helps it to carry out its important role as a pollinator of flowering plants. The reproductive pollen, produced by the flowers, adheres to the hair and is carried from flower to flower by the bee as it feeds, resulting in the pollen fertilising the plants.
