Wasp nest. Nest of the wasp Polistes sp. hanging off the stem of a plant. An adult female wasp is seen, probably the founder and queen of this nest. She conducts the initial building of the nest. Chewed-up dry plant material is mixed with her saliva and used to build a rounded structure of hexagonal cells. The cells point downwards so that no rain water collects in them. The founding female then lays an egg in each cell. Here, some cells have been sealed and contain larvae which will pupate into adult worker wasps. The first generation of worker wasps produced helps to raise the next generation of wasps | |
