Anopheles mosquito proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the tip of the proboscis of an Anopheles sp. mosquito, the vector for the malaria parasite. The proboscis is used by female mosquitos to obtain a blood meal from a human or other animal. The shaft of the proboscis is the labium. This is the lower lip and it protects the fascicle (bundle of delicate mouthparts) inside. The labium is tipped with two labella, which are pushed against the skin. Sharp maxillae (not seen) cut the skin and the fascicle (not seen) is inserted up to half its length, before the mosquito begins to draw blood up the needle-like tube. Magnification unknown | |
