Fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) spiracle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the spiracle (air pore) of a male fruit fly. Air diffuses into the spiracle and circulates round the fly's body in a network of tubes called tracheae. Waste gases then exit through the spiracles. Fruit flies are widely used in genetic experiments,particularly in mutation experiments,because they reproduce rapidly and their genetic systems are well understood.
