Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp). One of the two multi-faceted compound eyes (red) is seen. At the front of the head are fine antennae coated with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The snout (brown, lower right) contains a proboscis for ingesting food. Drosophila sp. flies are widely used in genetic research, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and because their genetic systems are well understood.
