Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp). Its two multi-faceted compound eyes (centre left and right) are seen. Above them are its antennae (blue, upper centre),which consist of small, fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The tube-like proboscis (lower centre) on the end of the snout is used for ingesting food. Drosophila sp. flies are widely used in genetic experiments, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and because their genetic systems are well understood.
