Fruit fly. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a fruit fly (Drosophila sp). One of the two multi-faceted compound eyes (brown, upper left) is seen. Above this are the antennae (yellow and blue, upper centre),which consist of small, fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. The tube-like proboscis (brown, lower right) on the end of the snout is used for ingesting food. Drosophila sp. flies are widely used in genetic experiments, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and because their genetic systems are well understood.
