False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a black fly or buffalo gnat (family Simuliidae),showing the compound eyes, short segmented antennae & biting mouthparts. Black flies are parasitic,blood-sucking Dipterans, closely related to the mosquitos. They breed in the area above the Iron Gorge (through which the River Danube flows),migrating to a large region including parts of Bulgaria,Rumania,Hungary,& Yugoslavia (often assisted by the wind). Damage caused by the swarms is extensive: fatalities amongst domestic & farm animals (including cattle & horses) have been recorded on a relatively large scale. Magnification x85 at 6x7 cm size | |
