False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The species is very widely used for genetic experiments, particularly on mutation, because it is easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. This specimen is the natural wild type known as Oregon R. Two large compound eyes (red) are visible on either side of the head; between them,on top of the head,is the ocellus or simple eye which is seen as three raised spots. The antennae consist of small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. Bristles,or setae, cover the fly's head & body. Magnification: x55 at 6x4.5 cm size.
