Scanning electron micrograph of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. The specimen is of the wild (or natural) type, known as Oregon R. It is widely chosen for genetic experiments,particular- ly on mutation, because it is easy to raise in large numbers & reproduces rapidly. The waist between the head & thorax is characteristic of flies, allowing some mobility. The head carries the sensory organs: large compound eyes on either side & a simple eye or ocellus - the 3 raised spots on the top of the head. The antennae are the small fleshy pads with bristle-like extensions called aristas. Bristles,or setae, cover the body. Magnification: x60 at 8x10-inch size | |
