Woodworm beetle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a woodworm beetle (Anobium punctatum). This insect, also known as the common furniture beetle,is the adult stage of the woodworm. Woodworms are grubs that live for up to four years in wood, often preferring the dry, seasoned wood of human dwellings. They create tunnels in the wood by secreting the enzyme cellulase to break down the cellulose. In its adult stage the woodworm doesn't feed and lives only long enough to reproduce. The woodworm beetle measures about 3-5mm long | |
