Cigarette beetle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a cigarette beetle or tobacco weevil (Lasioderma serricorne) on tobacco. The cigarette beetle is one of the most destructive pests of stored products in the world. A symbiotic yeast living in its gut supplements the beetle's diet and it can therefore live on foods that are poor in nutrients, such as dried tobacco, cigars and cigarettes, and a variety of stored spices and vegetables. The beetle has a hood-like pronotum (body segment behind the head),beneath which it tucks its head if disturbed. It is similar in appearance to its close relative, the drugstore beetle, but has serrated antennae | |
