Ladybird metamorphosis (sixth of 6 images). Macrophotograph of a seven-spot ladybird beetle,Coccinella septempunctata, metamorphosing. Metamorphosis is the transformation of a creature from an immature form (larva) into an adult. Here the adult form has emerged from its pupa on the underside of the leaf. The pupa was the dormant stage in which it changed body shape. The beetle's body has hardened on contact with the air. The beetle's orange elytra have developed the black spots associated with ladybirds. The metamorphosis is complete and the ladybrd is ready to fly away to begin its adult life.
