Image 3 of 7. Emperor dragonfly metamorphosis. Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator) emerging from its larval skin on a plant stalk, following metamorphosis. Its head is at lower centre. Emperor dragonfly larvae (nymphs or naiads) live in ponds for 2-5 years, followed by a period of dormancy when internal body changes take place. The nymph then crawls out of the water, and its skin splits, allowing the adult form (imago) to emerge (seen here). Dragonflies live as adults for a single summer.
