Image 2 of 2. Resting cicada. Adult cicada resting after emerging from its larval case (brown, upper left). Newly-emerged insects must wait for their wings to harden before flying. Cicadas usually inhabit trees, where females lay their eggs in the wood. The nymphs fall to the ground after hatching and bury underground to feed on juices from plant roots. They emerge as adults after a period of several years. Cicadas are best known for producing a loud sound by rubbing two membranes together,a process called stridulation.
