Nasute termites,Trinidad: soldier termites guard a column of workers as they run along a termite trail searching for food. The workers have large, rounded heads, whereas the heads of the smaller soldier termites are elongated into a sharp, conical process, used as a defensive weapon. A gland in the head of the soldier termite secretes a sticky,glue-like substance which is squirted out of the head process in a fine stream and can incapacitate ants and other small predators. The name "nasute" termite is derived from the Latin nasutus meaning long-nosed | |
