Young praying mantises. Group of young praying mantises (Family mantidae) scuttling along a branch. Praying mantises are carniverous insects with an independently movable head. They also eat their own kind and the female of some species eat the male during or after mating. Mantises which meet accidentally will often fight to the death. Due to their aggressive and ferocious appetite the mantises have been used as a natural form of pest control. Photographed in Maryland,USA | |
