Head louse. Light micrograph of the human head louse,Pediculus capitis. The head louse lives in hair on the head and feeds on blood from the scalp. Adult lice live for approximately 30 days, and during this time a female may lay 100 eggs (nits). The nits are glued to the hair shafts and hatch into nymphs after 7 to 10 days. The nymphs mature into adults in a further 7 to 10 days. The head louse is a common problem in schools because it is transmitted easily from child to child. It can be treated with insecticidal shampoos,by combing or using oils, for example coconut or olive oils. Magnification unknown | |
