False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the blood sucking human body/head louse Pediculus humanus crawling over human hair. The head & body louse are virtually indistinguishable unless their exact location is known. Head lice live in the hair while body lice frequent clothing. The louse, like all adult insects,is divided into head, thorax & abdomen; the seven segments of the latter are visible here. The three pairs of legs terminate in a claw for gripping. The wings have been lost during the course of evolution. Infestations of lice causes pediculosis,an intense itching which may result in bacterial infection. Magnification: X30 at 35mm size | |
