Springtails. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two springtails (order Collembola). These primitive insects have remained unchanged for millions of years, and are considered living fossils. The antennae of these insects can be seen protruding from their heads (centre left and centre right). These are their main tools for collecting sensory data,as their eyes are small and poorly developed. The eyes of the springtail at left can be seen as raised lumps at the base of its antennae. Their bodies are covered in fine hairs and scales. Springtails mainly live in leaf litter, and feed on decaying matter. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size | |
