False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a springtail (family: Collembola). Projecting from the front of the head are two large antennae, covered by numerous sensory hairs. Above each antenna 6 small eye facets are visible. The mouthparts are relatively small & are recessed underneath the head. The springtails are an order of primitive wingless insects characterized by a forked appendage at the tip of the abdomen used in leaping. This appendage is bent forward beneath the body & when released snaps sharply down & back, projecting the animal into air. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size. Gold tint | |
