Sally lightfoot crabs (Grapsus grapsus) and a marine iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) on rocks. These brightly coloured crabs inhabit the Galapagos Islands. They follow the tide-line throughout the day & night, feeding on algae and organic scraps. They are fast and agile across rocks and shallow water, but fall prey to herons on land and moray eels and hawkfish in the water. When disturbed, they can squirt water jets to confuse their adversary. The marine iguana, indigenous to the Galapagos,is the only true marine lizard, and is also known as the sea or Darwin's lizard. It is a herbivore, spending much of its time on land basking | |
