Hookworm parasite. Macrophotograph of the head of the parasitic nematode worm Ancylostoma duodenale. This is one of the commonest causes of hookworm disease (ancylostomiasis or ground itch) in humans, particularly in sub-tropical regions such as North Africa and India. The worm's head contains several tooth-like structures with which it attaches to the intestine lining of its host. Infestation begins with larvae penetrating the skin, usually by burrowing into the feet of a person. The larvae then enter the bloodstream and migrate throughout the body, particularly to the small intestine, where they mature, absorb food and produce eggs. Magnification unknown | |
