Tapeworm. Light micrograph of a unit (proglottid) from the body (strobila) of the parasitic tapeworm Taenia pisiformis. The proglottides absorb food that has been digested by the host directly through their surface. The strobila consists of a chain of proglottides which grow from the organism's head-like scolex which is attached to the intestines of its host,in this case rabbits and hares. The proglottides grow and develop eggs. Eggs are released from proglottides and are passed out of the body in the feces. They are then ingested by a new victim in whose intestines the eggs develop into adults. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size | |
