Great star coral colony (Montastraea cavernosa). The colony is comprised of many individual polyps. Each polyp has tentacles surrounding its mouth. The tentacles are extended to feed at night,as seen here. They remain withdrawn during the daytime. For an image of the coral during the day,see Z145/0442.
