Hard coral (Porites sp.) damaged by bumphead parrotfish (Bolbometopon muricatum). These large fish feed on coral polyps and algae that they scrape from the surface of the reef using their beak-like teeth. Coral damage such as this is quite common in areas that still have large schools of bumpheads. As well as eating the polyps themselves, bumpheads also ingest large amounts of coral rock which is then excreted as a fine sand. Much of the white sand found on tourist beaches is composed of this matter. Photographed in the Mapia Atoll,West Papua in Indonesia,Asia | |
