Hydra. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the coelenterate polyp Hydra. Hydra is a simple, multicellular aquatic animal. The mouth (centre) is surrounded by tentacles, which it uses to capture small items of food that float past on the current. Food particles are passed to the mouth for ingestion and waste is also eliminated out of the mouth. In good feeding conditions Hydra reproduces asexually by budding off a daughter polyp. In poor feeding conditions Hydra releases sexual cells into the water for fertilization to occur | |
