Hydra. Light micrograph of the coelenterate polyp Hydra. Hydra is a simple, multicellular aquatic animal. The mouth (upper centre) is surrounded by tentacles (long, thin) which it uses to capture small items of food which float past on the current. Food particles are passed to the mouth for ingestion. Waste is also eliminated out of the mouth. In good feeding conditions Hydra reproduces asexually by budding off a daughter polyp (as seen at left). In poor feeding conditions Hydra release sexual cells into the water for fertilization to occur. Magnification: unknown | |
