Protozoan spore release. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of an Enterocytozoon bieneusi spore (pink) leaving a host cell. This parasite invades the epithelial cells (one seen, green) of the human intestines, usually in immuno- compromised patients. It may cause severe diarrhoea and weight loss. The parasite is thought to be ingested in contaminated food and water. Asexual replication (merogony) inside the host cell produces mature spores, which are released from the cell by a process known as extrusion, and expelled from the body in the faeces.
