Isospora sp. parasites. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Isospora sp. parasites (yellow) in a sectioned cell. These asexual merozoites inhabit the epithelial cells of the human intestines, particularly in immuno- suppressed individuals. The parasite, surrounded here by a spore membrane (pink),is ingested in contaminated food and water. It replicates sexually and asexually in the lining, causing tissue damage. Symptoms of infection include diarrhoea, weight loss and fatigue. Infection is treated with drugs and prevented with good hygiene. Magnification: x6600 at 6x7cm size | |
