Fossilised foraminiferans. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fossilised shells of assorted foraminiferan protozoa (order Foraminifera). These calcium-rich shells were constructed by single-celled marine animals. The shells contain pores through which the animals extended branching pseudopodia,in order to catch particles of food. Foraminiferan deposits are the main constituent of chalk (limestone). They are important zonal fossils, being used to define the units of rock in which they are preserved.
