Thalassomyxa protozoan. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a Thalassomyxa australis prot- ozoan (single-celled animal). This naked amoeba lives in the seas off western Australia and eats diatoms. It changes shape over a regular period of time between the active form seen here and an inactive round form. Protozoa such as this are being used in biotechnology research at Axiva (part of Aventis) in Frankfurt,Germany. They are being studied to see if they can be used to produce useful biologically active chemicals such as enzymes, antibiotics and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Magnification unknown | |
