Vorticella protozoa. Light micrograph of two Vorticella sp. protozoa, attached by means of their stalks. The creature at centre has its stalk extended in a feeding position. The stalk is coiled and contracted in the specimen at lower centre because the creature has been disturbed. The bell-shaped heads at the end of the stalks have tiny,hair-like structures (cilia) which beat rapidly to capture food. The cilia are also used for movement. Magnification: x33 at 35mm size | |
