Protozoan algae. Light micrograph of a group of protozoan green algae,Euglena sp. Euglenoids are commonly found in stagnant freshwater, although some species inhabit terrestrial, brackish or marine environments. Euglena sp. obtain their nourishment through the process of photosynthesis. These species contain light sensitive chlorophyll pigments, which on exposure to light initiate a sequence of chemical reactions culminating in the formation of sugar from carbon dioxide. Euglenoids move by means of flagellae, whiplike structures at the ends of their bodies. Magnification: unknown | |
